3. Inch by inch: what breaking it free actually looks like

The Hagglund doesn't come free all at once. It comes free five or six feet at a time. "Might not seem like a big accomplishment to you," Rick tells the camera partway through, "but uh we moved it about 5 or 6 ft." Someone off camera answers with the obvious next step: do it again. Rick's own read on it is short and honest: "That's what winning's like." A few feet. Then a few more.

6. Safety: ice doesn't make a loaded line any less serious

Cold doesn't change physics. A kinetic rope under load and a winch line under tension are both storing or transmitting real force, ice or no ice. What changes is your footing. Your visibility of exactly where a load's going to go. How forgiving the ground is if you need to move fast.

⚠ Safety: Read This Before You Rig On Ice

These aren't suggestions. Each one exists because skipping it has hurt someone.

  • Anchor a kinetic rope only to a rated recovery point. Never a tow ball or a bare bumper, and never bare cable wrapped around an anchor and hooked back onto itself.
  • Never connect two ropes or straps with a metal shackle. If the shackle breaks under a kinetic snatch, it can fly like a projectile. Use the rated rope loop and a soft shackle instead.
  • Keep everyone clear of a load about to move. OSHA's general rigging rule states plainly that "all employees shall be kept clear of loads about to be lifted and of suspended loads."[3] That applies to a winch line under tension and a kinetic rope about to be snatched alike.
  • Inspect the rope and rigging before every pull, not just the first one of the trip. Federal rigging standards require a daily inspection by a competent person, and are explicit that damaged or defective rigging "shall not be used."[3] Ice, grit, and cold don't get a pass on this.
  • Don't shock-load rigging that isn't built for it. "Shock loading is prohibited"[3] for slings and shackles. A kinetic rope is engineered to absorb a sudden jolt through its own stretch. A sling or a shackle is not, and treating one like the other is how rigging fails without warning.
  • Stand well clear of the winch cable's full length while it's spooling, cold or not. Keep the cable wrapped around the drum a minimum of eight times, and don't exceed the winch's rated pulling capacity even when the load looks stubborn.[2]
